Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) is committed to the health, safety and welfare of all its staff, visitors and contractors

ISS has implemented a health and safety management system to meet the requirements of OHSAS 18001:2007. This provides a systematic approach to the implementation of health and safety and assists us in controlling health and safety risks and improving our performance in this area.

The ISS health and safety management system is based on the requirements of UK legislation and the associated Approved Codes of Practice. Whilst ISS considers this to be best practice world-wide, there may be regional variances and in some cases, these may be more stringent than defined in the ISS health and safety management system. Where identified, local safe systems are put in place to ensure compliance with the local legislation.

ISS knows that our employees are the most valuable resource we have, therefore, their health, safety and welfare is of paramount importance to the well-being of our business.

We understand that the most successful way to manage health and safety is to integrate it into the Company’s normal business activities. This is achieved in ISS by educating our people in the principles of health and safety, and defining their health and safety responsibilities within the business. To further reinforce our positive health and safety ethos, we performance manage health and safety, as we do for other business functions. We believe this approach allows us to keep to a minimum workplace injuries and ill health.

We are committed to:

  • Complying with all applicable health and safety national laws and regulations, voluntary programmes, collective agreements to health and safety and other requirements to which we subscribe
  • Providing and maintaining safe plant, safe work equipment and safe systems of work
  • Minimising the risk to health in connection with the use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances
  • Providing suitable information, instruction, training and supervision to our staff
  • Providing a safe place of work, together with a suitable means of access and exit for our staff and Partner Company’s staff
  • Providing emergency arrangements and facilities as required
  • Ensuring that workers and their representatives are consulted and encouraged to participate actively in all elements of the health and safety management system
  • Continually improving the performance of the health and safety management system.

Employees are required to take reasonable care for both their own health and safety and that of others, who may be affected by their actions or omissions. They must co-operate with management and their colleagues, to ensure compliance with all legislative requirements and standards and our health and safety policies and procedures, and are expected to carry out their duties within the requirements of our Safety Management System, to enable the Company to achieve high standards of health and safety in the workplace.

The Executive Management Team (EMT) is committed to developing a positive ethos that promotes and continually improves its health and safety at all levels within the Company. They ensure that all necessary financial and physical resources are made available, that staff are competent in the activities they undertake, and that necessary expert advice required to support ISS’ health and safety policy, is made available in a timely manner.
